About the world map in 2nd round

Postby 299792458 » Thu Sep 09, 2010 12:16 pm

It is glad to see Africa and North Korea no longer blank, but I am a little puzzled by the new map. Is it divided by country or country and region? As I find this time the color of Greenland is always same as Denmark (in the first round, it is blank). Is it only a coincidence or you changed the rule of map division form country and region to country? If so, I think Hong Kong and Taiwan should be part of China.

Well, there are lots of voters from Taiwan and Hong Kong, so I think the division was done by places with enough votes. I don't think you have divisions as little as Denmark, it's more like West Europe and East Europe.

So you put Greenland together with West Europe and decide map division by number of votes?
That is OK.

I suppose the map of voting can be controversy; that can potentially cause area attacks. I think I have already observed some whining addressing certain area. Actually, Taiwan is not considered as a part of China in most western countries, although the Chinese claim that Taiwan is part of China. I am pretty sure these words may anger you. Probably Toady's explanation can satisfy you. In fact, I am a "semi-international" student, who is a permanent resident of California but grew up in China. I have to keep my mouth away from politics in order to be free of troubles. Hopefully, you can respect others' opinion as well. Speaking about the map, I don't really want this map to be the blasting fuse of some discussion on politics. I do not support nor against the map so far since I haven't noticed any area attack comments.

Please excuse me if any of my words offended you. Note that this is my personal opinion.

This map has nothing to do with politics.

Short answer: The program we use to get IPs separate China, Taiwan, AND Hong Kong. While Hong Kong is now officially a part of China, we go by the program's region divisons.

Long answer: We divide the map into "regions," not countries. Taiwan is a region. Africa, as a whole, is a region. Western Europe, arbitrarily decided, is a region. If we lump China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong together, that tells us nothing statistically since all three areas combined have to such a large amount of voters. So divisions are made by vote totals, not politics. For example, if for some reason 15% of all ISML votes come from Hawaii, then we will separate Hawaii from the rest of the United States.

Trivia: The program also separates Macau, but I group those votes together with Hong Kong.

I give permission for anyone to accurately translate the message above in its entirety and post it anywhere on the Internet.

Lame translation ver. 1.4. = = (Chinese)
This map has nothing to do with politics.

Trivia: The program also separates Macau, but I group those votes together with Hong Kong.
注:国际最萌大赛官方使用的程序也把中国澳门单独区分出来。为了方便起见,官方把中国澳门与中国香港合并作为一个地区。

Glossaries:
ISML=国际最萌大赛。
China=中国
Taiwan=台湾
Hong Kong=中国香港(Chinese Hong Kong, lol. That is what officially called.)
Macau=中国澳门 (Same)
Western Europe=西欧
United States=美国
Hawaii=夏威夷州(State of Hawaii)
country=国家
region=地区

I was translating on behalf of the official staff. So, hopefully it sounds official.= =
BTW, I was using "American Chinese". Thus, it may sound weird to Chinese. However, I guarantee that I had fully translated what you said KS.

I will come back for this. Now I need to read the evil book XP
