While the Japanese government hasn't formally apologized for their attrocities in WWII, I heard that some politicians, including Prime Ministers, have apoligized themselves. It seems like this is a great source of shame for the Japanese people, and that might also be the reason why the government refuses to aknowledge what they did in the past. Either that, or they're aiming for an Orwellian dystopia. I'm betting on the latter, especially with a guy like Ishihara as governor.
